Maneuvering an aircraft can be hard work
From the 12 to the 15 April, the fearless aviators of FRAS Flying Club will make an attempt to circumnavigate the West-Malaysian peninsula with a formation of five aircraft and land at as many airports and airfields as possible. I counted 15 possible places to land, but I think there are even more than that.
We have passenger seats available for club members (you can become a day-member as well). In addition there should be plenty of opportunity for club pilots to come along and fly some of the legs.

Flight Log Pulau Rawa on 26 February 2012
Today I went to Pulau Rawa (a little island East of Mersing) and since I have now done it twice, I thought I would give some advice to fellow pilots who want to fly this beautiful VFR route.
Some basic information about this route:
- Distance: 144 nm
- Realistic time with about 5 to 10 minutes over Pulau Rawa: 1 hour 55 minutes
- AT4 fuel usage: 38 liters
- Flight log: download link (Apple Pages Format, this link is not going to be updated!)
- Flight plan: download link (Apple Pages Format, this link is not going to be updated!)

KL City Tour
On my way back from Langkawi, Captain Aziz (he is based in Subang) was so kind to reveal the secrets of a proper city tour over Kuala Lumpur. We flew in loose formation on an anti-clockwise course around the city center with its twin towers, around Batu Caves and back Subang. The weather was good and the usual haze hadn’t descended onto the city yet. Early morning was “clearly” the right time to marvel at the glory of KL.
From the air, KL doesn’t actually look that big and there are a couple of easy to recognize reporting points. Nevertheless, next time I want to do this on my own and so I created my own map to remember the reporting points, air spaces and so forth. As usual the map can be downloaded in the download section of my website. Read the rest of this entry »

Suyoung, Nigel and Ingo
Is there a good reason to fly to Malacca, have a coffee and a Nasi Lemak and fly back straight away? No! When you find the only coffee shop closed and left with the option to buy a Fanta, there is even less reason to do so.
Is that going to stop us pilots to do exactly that anyway? Of course not. We do it for the flying and for the surprised looks on our friend’s faces when we tell them that we will fly for a coffee to Malacca on Saturday. Read the rest of this entry »

Sunset over Gunung Pulai
A good start into the new year. I did an hour of night flying yesterday (4 January 2012). The weather was gorgeous – calm air, an almost full moon and a bright orange sunset. Night flying is in many ways similar to the normal day flying, but of course there are many differences as well. For every FRAS member, who has not done the night flying, I would strongly recommend to try it. The tropical night is truly magical. Click here for a couple of pictures i took while I was waiting for Paulo to come back from his sortie. Read the rest of this entry »

Ingo lifting kids in and out of the AT4
Almost 15 hours of flying time and one of the best days of my life at LIMA 2011, Langkawi – can it become any better that that? Hard to imagine, but I sure hope so. We went with an AT-4, a PA-28 and our good old Charlie Foxtrot (C172) to Langkawi to be an exhibitor at the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace show 2011. Our aircraft were the only GA planes on display together with fighter jets (SU-30, MIG-29, Eurofighter etc), massive transport planes and military helicopters. While it is hard to compete with this sort of hardware, at least with our 41 years old Cessna 172K 9M-WCF we had the oldest aircraft on display. The pictures and movies don’t do justice to the excitement of this adventure, but have a look here if you are interested. Alvin also has a blog entry with lots of great pictures, which is worth looking at here.

Pulau Rawa
A while ago I wrote in my Post “Nothing to see” that the weather foiled our attempt to take some photos of islands along the East coast. On the 15th of October we made another attempt and this time we had beautiful weather and good visibility. Read the rest of this entry »

Max with Papa in Piper 9M-FRM
The first time to Subang on my own and the first time flying with my son Max. We spent two exiting and challenging days flying to Subang on Thursday (13/10) and coming back on Friday (14/10). I had been to Subang three times before with an instructor. I felt pretty confident that I knew how to get there and how to handle Subang airport.

Ipoh Terminal Building (air side)
On the 24th and 25th of September I added Ipoh (WMKI) to the list of airports I have landed on. On Saturday morning around 9 am, we took off in Johor. In Subang we had a quick lunch and left for Ipoh about 12:30. We took the coastal route via Kapar, Kuala Selangor, Teluk Intan, Kampar and Gopeng and touched down in Ipoh after a one hour and 20 minutes flight. Captain Ridzuan had everything extremely well prepared as usual. I had put together flight plans and logs as well, but his stuff was better. Read the rest of this entry »
