Around (our) World in 4 Days

In Flight Log, Navigation on March 12, 2012 at 11:13 am

Maneuvering an aircraft can be hard work

From the 12 to the 15 April, the fearless aviators of FRAS Flying Club will make an attempt to circumnavigate the West-Malaysian peninsula with a formation of five aircraft and land at as many airports and airfields as possible.  I counted 15 possible places to land, but I think there are even more than that.

We have passenger seats available for club members (you can become a day-member as well). In addition there should be plenty of opportunity for club pilots to come along and fly some of the legs.

I am looking forward to this new adventure, since I have flown up and down the West and East coasts separately, but never tried to cross the Titiwangsa mountain range that divides the East and the West of the peninsula.

We will set a clock-wise course. That means on the first day we will go along the West coast to Langkawi via Malacca, Subang, Pangkor and Penang.  We will stay over night in Langkawi and cross the mountains the next day and stay in Kota Bahru for one or two nights.

While in Kota Bahru some of us will fly to Pulau Redang.  On the last day we will go down the East coast via Terengganu, Kerteh and Kuantan back to Johor. With the help of Captain Ridzuan I am going to ask for permission to land in Kuantan airport which is run by the Malaysian Air force, but has a few domestic flights per day as well.

Watch this space for a updates on the progress we are going to make.

I am estimating the trip will take about 16 engine hours and cover a bit more than 1000 nautical miles.

Course around Malaysia - About 1000 Nautical Miles

The airfields and airports I have counted are:

  1. Senai Airport, Johor
  2. Malacca Airport
  3. Subang Airport, Kuala Lumpur
  4. Bernam River Airfield
  5. Pangkor Island Airfield
  6. Penang Airport
  7. Alor Star Airport
  8. Langkawi Island Airport
  9. Ipoh Airport
  10. Kota Bahru Airport
  11. Redang Island Airfield
  12. Terengganu Airport
  13. Kerteh Petronas Airport
  14. Kuantan Airport
  15. Mersing Airfield
  1. 16. Tioman Airport

  2. We will certainly miss our club photographer 😉

  3. That is interesting!! I wish I could join you to become part of the famed ‘fearless aviators’ but alias, I will be going thru a particularly nasty period then… Guess its not meant to be this time. Wish you guys an interesting and safe flight! Clear skys and fair winds always!
