9MDRJ Repatriation

Her ladyship, 9M-DRJ, will be repatriated and become a US citizen once again.  The new owner decided to move her back to the N-register.  There are many advantages of doing that.  The maintenance is more straight forward and keeping a FAA pilot license current is easier too.  The biggest advantage is probably that getting an IR rating on a FAA PPL can be done, which would be fun with this plane, because it is fully equipped for IFR flight. My Record-Breaking Mini-Stopover in Singapore

I wonder what the shortest stop-over in Singapore might have been so far.  I mean a stop-over with immigration and customs clearance both ways, not just changing flights at Changi.  I don’t know the answer, but I think I might have come close to breaking the record for the shortest stop over yesterday.  I spend a grand total of 2 minutes in Singapore in between entry and exit clearances.  Thankfully Seletar doesn’t have that many passengers passing through, so I hope the always very helpful officers at the checkpoint didn’t mind too much.

You might ask why I was doing this.  Well, it wasn’t because I want to get into the Guinness Book of World Records, even so the thought briefly crossed my mind.  No, I had to go through immigration because I wanted to show Michael Dent how to fly in and out of Singapore and instead of the planned touch and go, ATC told me that I had to do a full stop and go to the Apron office.  The upside of this was that I could take Michael through a crash course of CIQ procedures as well.

Off to Malacca

By Ingo Noka.  Update: The weather was simply beautiful, just a bit bumpy below the cloud base.  I flew to Malacca as planned and went through Immigration there.  If it wasn’t for the 1 hour flight time, this is a more convenient place to complete the usual formalities.

Most of the flight time I spent at about 4000 feet altitude – nice and cool.  Seletar was very busy with four aircraft in the circuit (there is only a right hand circuit!).  I joined overhead at 2000 feet and joint downwind as number three.  Everything is very tight at Seletar, so I was rather close to the aircraft in front of me and my landing clearance didn’t come through until I was almost at the threshold, because the aircraft in front of me had to taxi some way to get off the runway.  The controller was on the ball and did a great job keeping everybody flying safely in such a confined airspace – thanks!

I didn’t make the 300 hours mark.  There are still a few minutes missing.  I am sure next weekend will be the day and coincidentally I will reach 100 hours of flying my own aircraft.

(Previous text: I need a bit over 3 hours to hit 300 hours total flying time in Single Engine Propeller aircraft.  Let’s see whether I can draw out a flight to Malacca this afternoon long enough to make it.  The plan is to stop in Malacca for CIQ (i.e. get a stamp in my passport) and then return direct to Singapore.)

Breakfast in Batam – How to fly to Batam, Indonesia

Rolling on runway 4 – Batam, Hang Hadim Airport

The Indonesian island of Batam is barely 10 nautical miles away from Singapore, but practically nobody ever flies there.  I think there are three reasons for that.  Firstly, the city of Singapore and the busy airspace of Changi Airport create a barrier between Seletar or Senai and Nadim Airport on Batam.  Secondly, it is somewhat inconvenient to get a flight permit from the Indonesian DCA and thirdly, parking, landing and ground handling fees at Nadim Airport are rumored to be excessive.

My mission this weekend was to find out what it is really like to fly to Batam from Seletar Airport. (I had help from KC Lim, who occasionally flies with me while he is waiting for the DCA Malaysia to issue his SPL so that he can start his training.) (Please click here for more pictures)

Young Eagles Day, 7 September 2013 – Subang Airport

More than 60 children became Young Eagles this weekend.

Much has been written about the lifelong passion that many pilots have for aviation and how this passion was ignited by this one flight when the pilot was still a small child.  Even more has been written about the need and the pleasure to give back to the community what we have received from aviation over the years.  The Young Eagles Day organized by the Malaysian chapter of the EAA (Captain Siva and his crew) was a rare occasion at which we could do both.  The EAA invited children from Community Children Homes and anybody who wanted to come along.  The response was overwhelming and while I didn’t count, I am sure we had close to 70 kids.  (see picture gallery here) Read the rest of this entry »

Malacca with Ian

Update 130901: We left the hotel in Malacca at 9:15 and touched down in Seletar at 11 am.  I had a brief chat with the very friendly immigration officer.  She told me that Malacca immigration services are available everyday from 9 am to 5 pm.  Next time, I won’t stop in Johor on the way to Malacca to get my passport stamped. The airport security desk charged me a landing fee of Ringgit 10.69 and a parking fee of Ringgit 6.27.  All very reasonable.

The weather was nice between Malacca and Batu Pahat, but then the cloud base came down to just a bit over 1000 feet around Benut.  Another aircraft, coming from Simpang Renggam was scheduled to arrive at Kulai at the same time as I, which required some coordination over the radio and old-fashioned VFR look out.

Paya Lebar Approach asked me to climb 2500 feet to join downwind 03 left at Seletar, which was odd.  Seletar then corrected to 2000, but even then I had the usual difficulties to loose height fast enough when I finally got clearance to descent for final.  I have to find a better method – maybe slowing down to flap speed earlier without descending and yank out the flaps to full even before turning to base.

Thailand Flight – Day 3 and 4 / 30 and 31 July 2013

Thailand Flight – Day 3 / 29 July 2013

9M-DRJ, a bit lonely at Hat Yai Airport, Thailand

On Monday, my short field take off skill was to be tested.  In a case like this, before you do anything else, you have to makes sure the weight and balance of the aircraft is acceptable for the runway you want to take off.  At a soft, grass field of 500 meters, that stuff really matters. Normally I take off from runways that are built for an A380, on which I have ample time to get up to speed or to abort if it is just not going to happen (the take off).

I couldn’t do  much about my own weight (which is embarrassingly high these days), so I made my plane as light as possible.  I had about 32 Gallons (87 Kg) of fuel and 25 Kg of luggage (mostly paper, iPad, laptop, handheld radio – this sort of thing).  Altogether, I and my plane were in good shape for a short field take off. (I did the calculation for takeoff ground roll and over 50 feet obstacle as well, which is a topic for another post.)

Ingo at Patong beach – Tourist for one day

Day two was a non-flying day.  DCA Thailand does not allow any flights that are not explicitly mentioned in the flight permit. Otherwise I would have loved to fly around the beautiful islands of Phuket.  Since that wasn’t an option, I did the next best thing and slept long, had a one o’clock breakfast and a few beers watching the people at Patong beach in the afternoon.  None of this was very exiting or unusual, so I leave it at that before you get bored with me.
