Go East – Where the Skies are Blue

In Flight Log on July 31, 2011 at 11:39 pm

Pulau Redang

I am not much of a fan of the Village People or the Pet Shop Boys, but I had the song “Go West” in my head when I thought about my flight along the east coast of Malaysia. “Go West, where the skies are blue” or “There where the air is free, we’ll be what we want to be.” have nothing to do with aviation, but fit perfectly. So I took the liberty to reverse the direction and “Go East” to start this blog entry about my flight to Pulau Redang and Kota Bharu from 29 to 31 July 2011. Big thanks to Captain Ridzuan, who prepared flight plans and navigation logs, found accommodation and took care of all the small and big things that need to be in place before one can take off into the (for most FRAS pilots) uncharted blue skies of the East. Pre-screening – east coast cross country flight

In Uncategorized on July 30, 2011 at 8:23 am

I am on a cross-country flight with captain Ridzawan (spelling is probably wrong) along the east coast of Malaysia. Yesterday we arrived in Terangganu and today we will fly to Pulau Redang. I have taken plenty of pictures taken and my usual iPad GPS log, which I will publish when I get back to Singapore. Read the rest of this entry »

Blessed silence – Lightspeed Zulu

Lightspeed Zulu in hard case

The Zulu Headset has been my first “aviation” purchase and I am pleased to say that it delivers everything I hoped for.  I spent considerable time on the computer to research active noise canceling headsets.  I looked at the Bose A20, the David Clark H10-13, the Sennheiser HMEC 460/350 and the Lightspeed Zulu.  The Internet is great for this sort of research, but there are so many contradicting reviews and opinions that it is hard to decide which one to believe.  The Lightspeed, however, had consistently better reviews than the others and it is not even the most expensive device.  I also liked the look of the “magnesium alloy” ear cups, so I went for the Zulu and do not regret it. Grounded

In Flight Bag on April 7, 2011 at 4:15 pm

Unless you want to get shot down and, should you survive, lose your license and go to jail, you won’t be flying from 4 May to 13 May.  The Malaysian airspace is closed almost entirely, because of a military exercise (BERSAMA SHIELD 11). Read the rest of this entry »

To Langkawi in style

In Flight Log, FRAS Affairs on April 6, 2011 at 5:31 pm

Click for more pictures from the last Langkawi long nav in December 2010

The FRAS flying club is organizing a long cross-country to Langkawi, from 29 April to 1 May.  I took part in a cross-country in December and while we didn’t actually make it to Langkawi, it was one of the most exiting adventures of my life.   Read the rest of this entry »

Frequent Flyer

Frequent Flyer

I am writing this while sitting in the Turkish Airline’s lounge in Istanbul on my way from Baku, Azerbaijan, to Almaty, Kazakhstan.  And this sentence says everything about the challenges of trying to be the event manager for the FRAS flying club.   I hope I will be in Singapore often enough to make this a success. Converted to Cherokee Warrior

In Flight Log on March 19, 2011 at 10:11 pm

Aircraft Rating PA-28

Today I finished my conversion to the Piper PA-28-161 (Warrior II). Around noon time I and Captain Singh took off with the intention to spend a cool and turbulence free hour over the water somewhere West of Pontian Kechill and Benut. However, when we got there we decided to ask for clearance to go to Batu Pahat instead. That was the first time I “filed” a flight plan in-flight. It is not a big deal, but good to know that this is possible, in case I get bored with circling in the training area and want to fly along the coast (from Kukup maybe) to Benut or so. I always wondered whether I can just call and ask. Now I know.

First Flight Piper Warrior II

In Flight Log, Private Pilot License on March 12, 2011 at 11:23 pm

After my First Flight with Piper PA-28-161 9m-FRR

I can add a new aircraft type to my “Aircraft I have flown”  web page.  This weekend I took off for the first time with one of the club’s Piper Warrior II PA-28-161 (9M-FRR).  The two Pipers came from the Singapore Youth Flying Club late last year (they have a picture of a PA-28 in the yellow-blue livery of the Youth Flying Club on the Piper Cherokee Wikipedia page). Shame on me

In Hangar Flying on March 9, 2011 at 10:22 pm

Dark clouds over Senai

Shame on me.  I missed an opportunity to do some flying, and it was all my fault.
I took a day off, because I couldn’t get an aircraft last weekend, and I didn’t want to go without any flying for two weeks.  Unfortunately yesterday evening I warmed up to the mini Asahi beers at Quarubar too much and on top of that I couldn’t refuse when an Singapore airline pilot (no less) offered me a drink. Crosswinds

Malaysian Flag flapping in 15 Kts wind

This Sunday I was finally able to do some crosswind landings. During the PPL period we did a few of those, but I always thought I hadn’t done enough to feel really comfortable.   Read the rest of this entry »
