Unless you want to get shot down and, should you survive, lose your license and go to jail, you won’t be flying from 4 May to 13 May.  The Malaysian airspace is closed almost entirely, because of a military exercise (BERSAMA SHIELD 11). It makes you dizzy thinking about the money that will probably be spent in these two weeks.  You could easily buy a bunch of new aircraft, pay for 10 years worth of fuel, give free flight training to youngsters and have plenty of spare cash for trips to Phuket and pilot’s nights to the end of our lives.  However, as these things go, national security takes precedence, and we will stay grounded.  Remember, though, that we have created an alternative for you: the FRAS “Pilot’s Night” on 7th May.  Please do not forget to sign up.  Just send me an e-mail or go to My Facebook page (Facebook Link).

The airspace will be closed from 4th May 2011, 8 am, Malaysian local time, to 13th May 19:00, Malaysian local time.  The details can be found in AIP Supplement 05/2011 from 3rd March 2011.  You will see this is a monster AIP supplement, but whatever else it says this paragraph right at the start says it all:  “Johor Bahru / Sultan Ismail Airport will be closed to non-scheduled traffic throughout the exercise.”
