FRAS Photo Shoot

In Flight Log, Social Life on September 17, 2011 at 10:49 pm

Domingo and Captn Singh in AT4 9M-EYM

On Saturday, we had bring-your-favorite-gadgets to the club day.  We wanted to do some photo and video shooting to have material for web sites brochures and so forth.  It turned out that flying is not the only expensive hobby our pilots are into.  The number of cameras we all brought along was nothing short of impressive.  I think I was the only one bringing a “point-and-shot” camera to a serious DSLR “fight”.  To be sure I also had my D80 in my bag, but that wasn’t anything to brag about.  Anyway, I am happy with my new little Coolpix P300 camera, which I bought recently.  As they say, the only good camera is a camera you actually have with you when you want to take a picture and the P300 is small enough to carry in my trouser pockets. Nothing to see

Haze

This weekend I took a colleague to the club to fly for the first time with a passenger (who is not an instructor) . He has lots of hours of flying time himself,  he just hasn’t flown for a while.  Unfortunately, for a sightseeing tour, there was precious little to see. Read the rest of this entry »

Go East – Where the Skies are Blue

In Flight Log on July 31, 2011 at 11:39 pm

Pulau Redang

I am not much of a fan of the Village People or the Pet Shop Boys, but I had the song “Go West” in my head when I thought about my flight along the east coast of Malaysia. “Go West, where the skies are blue” or “There where the air is free, we’ll be what we want to be.” have nothing to do with aviation, but fit perfectly. So I took the liberty to reverse the direction and “Go East” to start this blog entry about my flight to Pulau Redang and Kota Bharu from 29 to 31 July 2011. Big thanks to Captain Ridzuan, who prepared flight plans and navigation logs, found accommodation and took care of all the small and big things that need to be in place before one can take off into the (for most FRAS pilots) uncharted blue skies of the East. To Langkawi in style

In Flight Log, FRAS Affairs on April 6, 2011 at 5:31 pm

Click for more pictures from the last Langkawi long nav in December 2010

The FRAS flying club is organizing a long cross-country to Langkawi, from 29 April to 1 May.  I took part in a cross-country in December and while we didn’t actually make it to Langkawi, it was one of the most exiting adventures of my life.   Read the rest of this entry »

Converted to Cherokee Warrior

In Flight Log on March 19, 2011 at 10:11 pm

Aircraft Rating PA-28

Today I finished my conversion to the Piper PA-28-161 (Warrior II). Around noon time I and Captain Singh took off with the intention to spend a cool and turbulence free hour over the water somewhere West of Pontian Kechill and Benut. However, when we got there we decided to ask for clearance to go to Batu Pahat instead. That was the first time I “filed” a flight plan in-flight. It is not a big deal, but good to know that this is possible, in case I get bored with circling in the training area and want to fly along the coast (from Kukup maybe) to Benut or so. I always wondered whether I can just call and ask. Now I know.

First Flight Piper Warrior II

In Flight Log, Private Pilot License on March 12, 2011 at 11:23 pm

After my First Flight with Piper PA-28-161 9m-FRR

I can add a new aircraft type to my “Aircraft I have flown”  web page.  This weekend I took off for the first time with one of the club’s Piper Warrior II PA-28-161 (9M-FRR).  The two Pipers came from the Singapore Youth Flying Club late last year (they have a picture of a PA-28 in the yellow-blue livery of the Youth Flying Club on the Piper Cherokee Wikipedia page). Crosswinds

Malaysian Flag flapping in 15 Kts wind

This Sunday I was finally able to do some crosswind landings. During the PPL period we did a few of those, but I always thought I hadn’t done enough to feel really comfortable.   Read the rest of this entry »

Over the clouds to Mersing

In Flight Log on February 13, 2011 at 10:45 pm

At about 5000 feet altitude on the way to the Mersing

For the first time I have flown on my own to a place I have never been before!  I did my homework and prepared a flight plan and a flight log to Mersing.

Short Cross-Country to Bahtu Pahat and back

In Flight Log on February 7, 2011 at 12:09 am

Haze over Singapore

Finally the weather allowed me to fly a short cross-country to Bahtu Pahat and back to Senai airport.   This is the same route the club uses for the first three (short) navigation exercises.  There is no airport or airfield to land on.   Read the rest of this entry »

Not flying in the rain …

In Flight Log on January 30, 2011 at 1:49 pm

The weather has been dismal for the last few days.  Nevertheless, I got out of bed at 5 a.m. to be at the club for an 8 a.m. flight with Charlie Foxtrot.  Looking out of the window and following the rain radars and METAR/TAF on teh Internet started to show a picture that kept me from leaving the house.   Read the rest of this entry »
